Getting your California license under 18
A complete, step-by-step guide for teens and parents — from your first permit to passing the DMV driving test.
How California's licensing works
California uses a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, which eases new drivers onto the road in stages. If you're under 18 you'll move from a learner's permit to a provisional license by completing driver education, professional training and supervised practice. Here's the whole path, plus exactly what you'll need at each step.
The 6 steps to your license

Get your learner's permit at 15½
Once you turn 15½ you can apply. You'll need to have started driver education, bring your documents to the DMV, pass the written knowledge test, and pay the application fee.

Complete Driver's Education (30 hours)
California requires a state-approved driver education course. Our online course covers all 30 required hours and can be completed at your own pace on any device.

Behind-the-wheel training (6 hours)
Complete 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training with a DMV-certified instructor — MV Driving School handles this for you in our dual-control cars.

Practice 50 supervised hours
Log at least 50 hours of supervised driving — including 10 at night — with a licensed adult 25 or older. Drive in all kinds of weather, roads and traffic.

Hold your permit at least 6 months
You must hold your learner's permit for a minimum of six months and be at least 16 before you can take the DMV driving test.

Pass the DMV driving test
Book your behind-the-wheel test at the DMV. Returning MV students can use our dual-control car and get pre-test coaching and test-day support.

What to bring to the DMV
To apply for your learner's permit at 15½, you'll take the written knowledge test and provide a few documents. Bring these with you (and a parent or guardian) to your DMV appointment:
- Proof of identity (certified birth certificate or valid passport)
- Your Social Security number
- Proof of California residency
- Completed application (DMV form DL 44) with a parent/guardian signature
- Proof you've started or completed driver education
The written knowledge test
The teen knowledge test has 46 questions on road rules and signs — you need 38 correct to pass. The application fee covers up to three attempts, and if you don't pass the first time, under-18 applicants can retake it after a short wait. Study the California Driver's Handbook beforehand.
Tip: you can start your DL 44 application online first (the DMV's eDL44) to save time in the office — then finish and take your test in person.
Take a few free practice tests and read the handbook's sign section twice. Most students who do this pass on their first attempt.
Your first year: the rules
Once you pass your driving test you'll get a provisional license. For the first 12 months, two important restrictions apply (limited exceptions exist for work, school or medical needs with a signed note).
No late-night driving
For the first 12 months, you can't drive between 11 PM and 5 AM unless a licensed driver 25 or older is with you.
No young passengers
For the first 12 months, you can't carry passengers under 20 unless a licensed driver 25 or older is in the car.
